Weather helps tamp down California wildfire
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Thousands of evacuees began returning home Saturday as a blanket of cool, moist air flowing in from the ocean brought a dramatic change, taming the wind-driven wildfire that had burned 80 homes along the outskirts of town.

The California Rte. 1 south drive from Monterey to Morro Bay is a 123-mile, six-hour trip along the Pacific coastline. Before heading south out of Monterey on Rte. 1, visit the Royal Presidio Chapel, Monterey State Historic Park, Custom House, Casa Soberanes, Larkin House, Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, home of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. A few miles south of Monterey, stop in Carmel-by-the-Sea to visit the Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo, founded in 1770; the Tor House, home of poet Robinson Jeffers; and Carmel River State Beach.
Residents told to flee California wildfire
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Turning the horizon a lurid orange and raining embers on roofs as it advanced, a raging wildfire that has destroyed scores of homes in the hills menaced this celebrity enclave and other coastal towns Friday, and the number of people ordered to flee climbed to more than 30,000.
